For the past 10 years, this has been my holiday celebrational anthem as I make that cherished journey back to my first and most beloved home Virginia in order to join my friends and family for the Annual Jingle Jam Benefit Concerts.

I wrote the seasonal lyrics to this old tune in that spirit back at the beginning of my participating, and we've performed it, I believe, at every one of the shows.

When I learned that this year's shows were not to happen, I felt personal disappointment-- for myself, sure...but aside from it being such a reliably soulful seasonal celebration of our community there, it indeed has also raised much needed dollars, formidable dollars, for the great work done by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We're all touched by this epidemic, and have been for much longer than this most recently tenacious but soon to be defeated one.

So I post this new recording of the song for those folks who may recognize and perhaps find some joy and revelry in its familiarity, but please--if you would, feel free to download it after contributing what you can to the fund this year, as you have so generously in years past.

Lyrics

Going Home For Christmas
(Lyrics by Jon Carroll)

Well I’m going home for Christmas
Baby don’t you wanna go
I’m going home for Christmas
Baby don’t you wanna go
Gonna stand by you baby
Right beneath that mistletoe

We’re going we’re going where the kinfolks treat you kind
We’re going where the kin will treat you kind
Where you can see for yourself that down home love so blind
Alt/ when the holiday’s done you’re gonna wanna linger behind

I’m gonna leave the city got to get away
I’m gonna leave the city got to get away
This bus gonna be our wondrous one horse sleigh

Well we’re wrapping up the packages
And heading out today well
You might be curious and be begging me do pray tell
But it’s a secret
And I ain’t gonna say
But it’s done and it’s fun
And you’ll get it on Christmas day!

No use in complaining
That the season aint bright
Come back to your home boy
And plug in and shine your light
